Men and Children through History
Children, especially sons were highly important to men throughout history and in many cases daughters are not as desired as sons even nowadays. The reason for that has probably much to do with history in which men were superior members of the society what clearly indicates the fact that all the greatest state rulers, military leaders, inventors, engineers, etc. were all men. There were of course also many women who entered history for their achievements but they were more exception that rule. This does not mean that women were less capable but simply reflects the fact that women women were pushed aside and "entrusted" only to take care for household and raising the children.
Male descendants were heirs to the thrones and family's estates but they were also
means of the continuation of family's name and in certain sense also continuation of
the family itself. When the male line of a certain family became extinct usually
became extinct also the family regardless to female line. Women sometimes inherited
their fathers' titles and wealth but they were generally faced with opposition of
their male relatives or pushed aside by their new husbands who usually assumed all
power.
Despite the importance children represented to men throughout history they felt completely comfortable leaving the job of raising their children over to their wives. That does not mean men were not interested in their children's well being, behavior and education or that they did not participate in child raising at all. However, they sure did not reject an invitation to a bar to stay with the children so that their wives could spend some time on their own.
